First of all, HAPPY NEW YEAR! We truly hope 2021 will make up for the past year and allow you to reach your goals and aspirations.
We start the year by looking back at the travels made during Christmas and new year vacations. As we all experienced, these vacations were far from normal. We had to reduce our mobility and contact with family member. However, it did not stop many from travelling!
As of Friday December 18th, according to the latest TSA data, the United States had over one million flight passengers in one day! Saturday and Sunday were also over a million passengers, 3.2 million passengers over the weekend, which notes the highest consecutive traffic of the year since March. A very positive note to end the year!
In Europe, there also was an increase in reservations prior to Christmas and new Year however it did not reach the levels of the US.
As of the 5th of October 2019, online travel agency Kayak reported that domestic flight searches were down 81% and hotel searches were down 74% compared to last year. But that doesn’t mean people won’t be traveling.
Lufthansa, for example, said in a statement that it saw up to 400% more bookings in the first week of December compared to the previous week, with destinations like South Africa, Namibia, the Canary Islands, Madeira, and northern Finland proving popular.
The airline said it was responding by adding more flights, including to the Canary Islands from Frankfurt and Munich, as well as resuming flights to Seville and Palermo.
Is this an indication of what can be expected in 2021?
Obviously we don’t know what the future holds, however we remain optimistic and look forward to this year. We have prepared all our team and resources to adapt to this “new normality” and are confident that Viap will maintain the quality and flexibility of its services no matter what 2021 has in store for us.
